Morris County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Police Officer Alyssa Jodexnis was on her way home after finishing up a double shift at the Morris County Correctional Facility on Sunday, August 20 when she saw smoke billowing from a Ridgefield Avenue residence around 11:20 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said.
She then saw two men yelling from the front steps of 56 Ridgedale Ave. as flames became visible from the top window.
After pulling over and dialing 911, Officer Jodexnis talked with the men, asking them if anyone else was inside. She directed them to a safe place and told them not to enter before evacuating the adjacent apartments herself as police and fire crews responded.
The Morris Township Police Department rushed to the scene and worked alongside Officer Jodexnis to evacuate neighboring apartments until all residents were accounted for and deemed safe.
“Officer Jodexnis is exemplary in her performance. Going beyond expectations in these circumstances after completing an extended tour of duty epitomizes this act of outstanding personal bravery and quick, intelligent thinking in the face of potential danger,” said Sheriff James M. Gannon. “On behalf of the people of Morris County, I thank you for your actions in this time of need.”
